PocketMac Donates Portion of Profits to OLPC Project

OLPC

Talk of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program, once on the tip of everyone's tongue, has been waning lately as executive members jump ship and project teams are sent in different directions.

Not everyone has forgotten about this important program designed to put affordable laptop computers into the hands of children in impoverished nations, however. PocketMac, creators of Mac-to-handheld device syncing software, announced a fundraising partnership today with OLPC to drive additional money to the program and raise awareness of the project.

PocketMac will donate $10 to OLPC for every copy of RingtoneStudio 2.0 for iPhone sold during August and September. RingtoneStudio 2.0 is a nifty app that lets users create custom ringtones from music and movie files via an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface. The app sells for $29.95 and PocketMac has sweetened the pot with the offer of an extra free ringtone with purchase. It's a silent ring that lights up your iPhone but won't make noise so it's a perfect "tone" to assign to callers you're not interested in speaking with.

Tim Goggin, PocketMac's VP of Sales & Marketing, told OStatic he's thrilled OLPC is interested in working with his company. "We've heard about the wonderful things OLPC does and it seemed like a natural fit. We reached out to them and they've been very receptive. It's been a pleasure working with them."

How is one to know that they are actually donating $10 per purchase to OLPC? Ever since Hurricane Katrina, I'm hesitant to do anything in the name of charity just because they say they will. If there is some tracking component that let's me see where my money went and whom it benefited makes me feel better about the transaction. As kooky as that may sound to others, it's not impossible, thus it makes it perfectly sound reasoning in my book.

Suffice it to say, these are tough financial times, I don't just give money away because somebody swears it's for a good cause. I need proof.

David,

That's a great question and completely understandable. According to the Web site, donations are made in the registered users name so I suppose that would be easy enough to track with OLPC. I'd also encourage readers to check directly with PocketMac with any questions about this fundraiser. Tim Goggin is very responsive.
