Linus, LibreOffice, and Linux
Today in Linux news, Linus Torvalds posted pictures of him actually flying in real world fighter jets and expressed frustration at new Gmail spam filtering. Caolán McNamara posted a screenshot of LibreOffice running on Wayland and The Document Foundation announced the publication of ODF 1.2 as ISO 26300. Attila Orosz reviewed Antergos and Dedoimedo put SteamOS 2.0 Beta through some tests.
Linus Torvalds was in the news again today at the Business Insider and Wall Street Journal. Business Insider today covered Torvalds' post on Google+ saying, "Not many people know this about me, but in between kernel pulls I relax by doing fighter jet rides." His post was accompanied by three photos of the Linux creator riding shotgun in an USAF T-33. Next to one image Linus said, "That's me in the back." Business Insider's Julie Bort got more of the back story saying, 'When acrobatics pilot Gregory "Wired" Colyer discovered that Torvalds lived in nearby Portland, Oregon, he offered to take him on his a Zero-G fighter pilot ride, a first for Torvalds.' The Linux Foundation posted a video to their YouTube channel of Torvalds discussing the experience.
The Wall Street Journal ran a blog post today about Torvalds' open letter to the Google Mail Team. In it he said, "Something you did recently has been an unmitigated disaster. Of the roughly 1000 spam threads I've gone through so far, right now 228 threads were incorrectly marked as spam. That's not the 0.1% false positive rate you tried to make such a big deal about last week. No. That's over 20%. I don't know how to even describe the level of brokenness in those kinds of spam numbers. Quite frankly, that sucks. It's not acceptable." The numbers worsened over the next day or two and Torvalds figures the new spam filters just hate mailing lists. "About 30% of my spam-box wasn't actually spam," Torvalds added later.
The Document Foundation's Italo Vignoli today posted of ODF 1.2 being published as International Standard 26300:2015. Vignoli wrote, "ODF 1.2 is the native file format of LibreOffice. ODF is developed by the OASIS consortium. ODF 1.2 is supported by all the leading office suites, and by a large number of other applications." Speaking of Vignoli, OpenSource.com ran an interview with TDF co-founder yesterday who said, "After five years, we face the strong reality of a successful free software project." In other LibreOffice news, Red Hat developer Caolán McNamara today posted a screenshot of his success in getting LibreOffice to launch and pretty much work under Wayland.
