Red Hat has rolled out the newest update of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, RHEL 5.3. In addition to virtualization and power-saving enhancements, this update is also shipping the first productized implementation of OpenJDK for Red Hat.
The 5.3 update includes increased scalability of physical and virtualized environments. According to a prepared statement, "The number of supported physical CPUs is increased to 126, while maximum memory is increased to 1TB. Virtual server CPU and memory limits have been increased to 32 and 80GB respectively." There are also increases for paravirtualized device drivers, and per-guest limits for disks and network interfaces.
RHEL 5.3 now includes full support of block or file system level storage encryption, and can be configured at the time of installation. OpenJDK is compatible with any application written Java SE 6 and has passed the full Java SE 6 Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK).
The update is available to Red Hat subscription customers via the Red Hat Network, and does not require hardware or application recertification.
