Ubuntu 9.04 Releases Today; Jackalopes Run Rampant on Servers, Desktops and Netbooks

I was never one for cryptozoological taxidermic creations -- you won't find mermonkeys or crocoducks on display in my home. I have, however, for the last few weeks, been hiding a jackalope in my laptop bag. He was an experimental little guy, but the folks at Canonical and the vast community behind Ubuntu have completed the necessary gene splicing and DNA alterations and soon -- very soon -- the final, stable release of Ubuntu 9.04 (the Jaunty Jackalope) will be let loose into the wild.

What's new this time around? How does it all work? And for the wilder types, where locally can you attend a Jaunty Jackalope release party?

The 9.04 release is notable in a few ways. It's the tenth Ubuntu release, the first to support the ARM processor, and it's the first release we've seen an official Ubuntu Netbook Remix image roll out alongside the traditional server and desktop ISOs.

The Jaunty Jackalope introduces Ubuntu users to a new, unified, and less intrusive notification system, gives the option to migrate to the ext4 file system, boasts significantly faster boot times and better support for suspend and resume on laptops and switching between wireless connection types.

For the past few Ubuntu releases, I've rather enjoyed (which probably says a whole lot about me) installing the beta version shortly after it is available and watching the bugs, quirks and crashes become fewer and fewer. Even in beta, the improvements made with this release couldn't be missed -- especially the enhanced boot performance. Just five days ago, crash report notifications dropped off, and three days ago ceased entirely. It's really quite fascinating to watch a strong product come together and get so polished, so quickly.

If you're interested in keeping a finger on the pulse of the release day action, Ubuntu community manager Jono Bacon says that the #ubuntu-release-party channel on Freenode is the place to be. Ubuntu 9.04 (server, desktop and Netbook Remix editions) will be available later today (April 23rd) via free download, on media purchased directly from Canonical, or by requesting a free disk through the Ubuntu ShipIt service.
