Understanding Drupal for Content Management: DVDs and Podcasts

by Sam Dean - Jul. 08, 2008Comments (2)

Drupal is not only one of the most robust open source content management systems (CMS) around, but much of the OStatic site is fueled by it. It allows system administrators lots of control over content, provides flexible presentation, automates administrative tasks, and manages site visitors and contributors. Especially if you're just embarking on building a rich site, put in a pre-order for Lullabot's new DVD, due July 21st:  Understanding Drupal. In addition to the DVD, Lullabot has over 60 podcasts on Drupal, ranging from getting started to how to port modules,  to interviews with Drupal experts. Here's what you'll find in the new DVD.

Lullabot has consulted with such companies as MTV, Sony BMG Records, Lifetime Television, IBM, and Fast Company in building and growing their Drupal sites. The new video is mostly in documentary format, and features many interviews on what Drupal is capable of and how to get started with it. Topics include:

  • How content is entered and managed
  • How users and user permissions are handled
  • What blocks are and what they can do
  • The concepts and capabilities of Drupal’s powerful module system
  • How Drupal handles navigation and its menu system
  • How themes alter the site layout, design, and presentation
  • Site configuration and administrative messages and settings
  • This video uses Drupal 6 for examples, however it is focused on general Drupal concepts rather than version-specific how to's.

OStatic got a chance to preview Lullabot's DVD, and it looks to be useful for anyone contemplating building a rich site. It's available for pre-order now, and will arrive July 21st. You'll be able to download it for $30, or you can get the DVD sent to you for $40. Lullabot's many podcasts on Drupal are free, and this Getting Started podcast is a good beginning. A portion of the profits for the new DVD will go to the Drupal Association.
