Popular open source media player project VLC put out a call this week looking for Mac OS X developers. The team released an update solely for Mac users that includes updated libraries, buggy behavior on Power PC-based Macs, and an apology to the entire Mac community.
When the team released VLC media player 0.9.9 last week (along with a new logo), it included a bugfix for video performance on Intel-based Macs. Reports of additional buggy behavior on VLC for Mac began to surface so developers quickly pulled together update 0.9.9a aimed specifically at Mac users.
"Due to a lack of active Mac OS X developers, these issues remained unnoticed for the last release. We are sorry for the noise and are looking for enthusiastic Mac developers to help and support us," read the update notes.
There's a lot to like about VLC media player beyond music playback. The app also allows users to transcode videos and songs between formats, including Ogg. VLC is a robust app with a long list of features, yet remains small enough to run from a USB thumb drive.
Not every Mac user adores Apple's media player iTunes. If you're looking for a good alternative, give VLC a try. If you've got the technical chops to help develop the Mac version, be sure to get in touch with the team.
