The Importance of Protecting Youth:
Banning Books
For as long as humans have printed books, censors have argued over their content and tried to limit some books’ distribution. Every year, high schools around America analyze thousands of books to choose the most compelling and engaging titles for young teen readers, many parents often feel that the chosen books are inappropriate for their kids. Many people have a problem with book banning and believe it should be a human right to let school-aged students to choose for themselves. This has been a problem for decades that people have not been able to solve. The other side of the controversy is that parents and teachers should choose what books students can read. Though banning books and censorship is a big issue right now, various people agree with the statement that young adult, or YA, literature should be censored due to topics becoming increasingly open. As time moves on, this world is becoming more filled with violence, profanity, inappropriate topics, and zero morals. The sad truth is that even books are being filled with these topics. No one would want their child reading these topics because it will influence them as they get older.
The first step that should be taken on banning books for young adults is to make sure books with inappropriate subjects are banned. If we look at society today, it is obvious that books can influence vulnerable people. Young people may even use reading inappropriate books as an excuse for bad behavior. It can take a while but if parents can try their best to make a difference in this world; this is one more step to a better society. Not only will it allow parents to have the peace of mind that their child is not being fed immoral topics, but it will help others see the difference in school-aged students.
Another reason books should be banned is because schools should not keep books with inappropriate content from young adults to protect them. Many young people should not be exposed to topics that will not improve their lives. This would not be a problem because writers and authors who choose to keep writing about can still sell their product; just not to young adults attending schools. If this were to be the case, many people would feel that this would show people’s values and respect for many in the community. Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council noted t...
