“An individual’s perception of conflict is intrinsically linked to their core values and beliefs!”
To what extent is this view represented in the texts studied? Refer to To Kill a Mockingbird, Prelude to War and one related text.
Through an individual’s perspective and central principles, it is an essential component for the insight of conflict. This is extensively engrained in the texts To Kill a Mockingbird, Prelude to War and The sniper. Through morality and an individual’s personal journey it ultimately marks how they view the world and hostility that accompanies it. The ongoing and ever-changing process of values forms our individual personality and behaviour responding to conflicting stimuli.
The nature of conflict is a diverse aspect that incorporates the opinion of gender expectations and the internal gender struggle that society face. These concepts are generated by a westernised society that impose unrealistic expectations surrounding masculinity and feminine standards. This is evident in the visual medium ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ directed by Robert Mulligan. The prevalent endeavour of gender expectations can be recognised when Jem states to Scout “I swear you act like a girl every time”. Manipulating her viewpoint into doing male activities and always obliging to their standards otherwise they ostracise her. Through this simile it is an insult to the gender differences and to degrade being a female. Therefore, through the westernised core values that was imposed on the individuals it generates how they create and respond to differentiation. Atticus experiences issues regarding masculinity and trying to balance his caring and considerate nature. This is represented when a camera zooms in of Atticus reading a bedtime story to his children. Even though it was not expected of a male to do this during the time period it was conveyed in. Gender expectations and the internal gender struggle is a feature of conflict that can occur from main core values.
Conflict is present in everyday life and an essential part of the human existence, it is formed by fundamental values and opinions of an individual. In “Prelude to War” directed by Frank Capra it distinguishes ideologies of freedom and liberty that make a country worth fighting for. These core beliefs are seen in the score that includes a lower pitch associated with the enemy.
