Irony
Near the end of the book, Simon loses his memory. He loses all memory of the Shadow world and any of his friends. He loses his immortality as well. He becomes a regular mortal. Clary and Isabelle are heartbroken by this. Clary has lost her best friend and Izzy has lost another person she loves. One day when Izzy, Magnus, and Clary are watching Simon, Clary decides to approach him. She wants him to recognize her. After he says he has no idea who she is, he hands her a flyer for his band. Clary is too upset to look at the flyer. She gives it to Isabelle, who gasps at the sight of it. The name of Simon's band is The Mortal Instruments. This shows irony because despite losing all his memory, Simon somehow still remembers the name of the shadowhunters most prized artifacts.
Literary elements are very important and useful in books, especially in this one. Literary elements help enhance the reader's experience, and are a good technique to use. Some literary elements used in City of Heavenly Fire are symbolism and irony.
"Black for hunting through the night
For death and mourning the color’s white
Gold for a bride in her wedding gown
And red to call enchantment down.
White silk when our bodies burn,
Blue banners when the lost return."
-City of Heavenly Fire by Casssandra Clare
Symbolism is when something represents something else. In the City of Heavenly Fire, there is a lot of symbolism. One example of symbolism is this rhyme. This rhyme is a shadowhunter children's rhyme. This is an excerpt of the rhyme, but the whole rhyme is an example of symbolism. For example, gold represents a wedding, and white represents death. This means shadowhunters wore gold for weddings and white for funerals, or to foreshadow a character soon to die.
The only thing that can beat him is the heavenly fire.
However, the heavenly fire still lies inside of Jace (from the previous book).
Clary and her friends have to follow Sebastian into a demon dimension to stop him.
After arriving in the demon dimension and barely surviving several demon attacks, Clary uses a rune to transfer the heavenly fire from Jace to her sword. She stabs her brother and all the evil in him is burned away.
After killing Sebastian they are all still stuck in the demon dimension. The only way they can get out is if they make a barter with the prince of hell.
The Prince of Hell wants Magnus’ immortality. No one is willing to let Magnus die, but everyone wants to escape.
Simon, who happens to be a vampire, ends up giving away his immortality and any memories of the shadow world so every...
