Genetically Modified Organisms Essay - High School - Essay

808 words - 4 pages

As the world becomes more and more industrialized, chemicals are spread throughout
different aspects of our lives in a way that we cannot control. These chemicals are in
everything from the food that we eat to the air that we breathe. Although chemicals have
some favorable factors, they are unnatural and overall unsafe. They cause health
problems and are not meant to be ingested. It is extremely concerning to me that the
majority of the food that is produced and consumed is contaminated with GMOs. Due to
the fact that GMOs are so widespread and cover most of the crops in the world, it is
extremely difficult for people to maintain an all natural and healthy diet. It should not be
this hard to do so.
About 70-80% of today’s processed food contains GMOs. If you have never
questioned where the food you consume on a daily basis comes from, it’s time to start
questioning. A GMO is a new version of a plant or animal that is created by altering
genes using biotechnology. Today, more than 40 types of plants have been genetically
modified and are available buy. On top of this, 90% of Canola, 88% of Corn and 94% of
soy are genetically modified. The FDA claims that GMOs are nothing to worry about,
and that it is perfectly healthy to consume food that is artificially made. From their
perspective, genetically modified plants are just as safe and tested the same as
traditionally bred plants (“U.S. Food and Drug Administration”). The FDA leaves the
safety testing up to companies that produce GMOs, but the tests hide the clear facts of
the risks, so they can gain profit from consumers. On the other hand, independent
research not sponsored by these companies agree that GMOs found in food are not at
all as safe as certified organic food. GMOs have been proven to cause cancer, harm the
environment, and induce multiple other health problems.
Although GMOs are beneficial in keeping crops fresher longer and speeding up
the growing process which is good for the economy, it is morally wrong to be loading so
many harmful chemicals onto food that is being consumed at such an enormous rate.
Some of this food is also being labeled as “organic” so that people think that it is healthy
for you, while it is still layered with chemicals. This is not how it should be. People
