Liberal Ideas of a Liberal Candidate
The second paragraph in the Declaration of Independence says, “…all men are created equal by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” To my mind, the liberal philosophy has quite similar values. Therefore, it is more important to vote for a candidate with liberal ideas because such a candidate would more vigorously promote freedom of speech and equality of opportunity.
First of all, a liberal candidate will most likely favor freedom of expression in three areas. The first area is freedom of speech that is fundamental in a democratic society. It includes the right to hold and exchange opinions, viewpoints, and ideas without fear of persecution. Furthermore, it allows people to study many different opinions about all the issues on which we can then possibly reach a consensus. Also, the freedom of speech protects the freedom to seek, receive, and share information, which is important for promoting education, for developing ourselves as individuals, and for helping our society. The next area, which is most likely favored by a liberal candidate is the freedom of the press. This freedom includes the right of “communication and expression through various mediums, such as electronic media and published materials” (wikipedia.org). The freedom of the press means that everyone has the right to provide or gather information for publication on any subject without censorship or risk of persecution.
