The satirical essay “The Lowest Animal” by Mark Twain points out nine traits that
applies only to Man. These nine traits portray why Twain views Man as the “lowest”, making
others the highest animal. These nine traits separate Man from other animals with distinct
reasons. Of the nine traits, there are three that are still very relevant in today's world. “Man is the
only animal who is cruel”, “Man is the only animal who is greedy and miserly, and “Man is the
only animal who is vengeful” are all traits that are almost seen in a daily basis.
One of Mark Twain’s noticeable trait, especially in 2017 is “Man is the only animal who
is cruel.” This trait definitely impacts everyone, from public shootings, gang violence, and
violent criminals. There is not another animal in the world that kills other animals of its same
species without a reason. When an animal that is not Man, kills others, it is for reason. They kill
for food, safety, or protection. Only Man kills strangers that have no relation to them for no good
reason. For example, the shooter from Las Vegas had no motive, wasn’t threatened but murdered
dozens of people for no reason.
