Raisin is the Sun is about an American family who is trying to obtain that American dream. The younger family comes from poverty and want to improve their lives. The idea of the American dream is viewed differently by each member of the Younger family. All the characters have different ideas of how to improve their life’s. Walter Younger thinks money is that why to go , Mama thinks a better house is the way to go and Beneatha thinks education is that way to go . The family’s thoughts on the American dreams normally conflict with each other thought the story.
Walters’ dream of the American dream is starting a business and making it big. He dreams of owning a small liquor store. he believes that owning a business it will provide him and his family with a greater income and take them out of poverty. When the check for ten thousand dollars comes Walter sees he opportunity to achieve his dream. However, Walter is blinded by money and he hurts the people he lives during the chase for it. Walter states that the reason he wants to start the store, so he can better his own life. One scene forms the story that shows Walters version of the American dream is when he is describing his “future”. ” You wouldn’t understand yet, son, but your daddy’s gonna make a transaction . . . a business transaction that’s going to change our lives. . . . That’s how come one day when you ‘bout seventeen years old I’ll come home . . . I’ll pull the car up on the driveway . . . just a plain black Chrysler, I think, with white walls—no—black tires . . . the gardener will be clipping away at the hedges and he’ll say, “Good evening, Mr. Younger.” Walter version of the American dream is to make money. He wants the fancy house and the nice car, have a health family and good home life is not on the top of his mind. He views conflict with his mom’s views on the American dream.
