Dana Blankenhorn on ZDNet asks an interesting question today: "Where Should Mozilla Go From Here?" It's hard to believe that the company's Firefox browser turns only five years old today. Stephen Shankland also weighs in on where Mozilla and Firefox should head next. I'm in favor of Mozilla becoming a more independent company, so that it can push its own initiatives in flexible ways, and I also think it has a huge opportunity in the mobile browsing space.
Here at OStatic, we regularly round up educational posts and new ideas for users of open source. Here, below the fold, are 8 useful collections of open source tools and tips to try.
This week is a big one for open source browsers, which, as we've pointed out many times, are responsible for most of the innovation going on in the browser arena. The first beta version of Firefox 3.6 is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, and you can get it here. Meanwhile, Google has delivered a very fast new beta version of the Chrome browser, and it features bookmark syncing so that you can keep your bookmarks streamlined across multiple computers.
I've noticed that Firefox 3 is slower than the earlier versions & seems to be more resource-hungry. I'm thinking about permanently switching over to Opera, which is very fast. But the drawback is that I will miss my FF addons. Has anybody had bad experiences with FF3?
I'm using a Mac w/ Leopard and firefox 3 has been crawling off late. I never had this problem with FF 2 - does anyone know why this might be happening - a software conflict? I don't know, any ideas?
Its been less than 24 hours since I started using this - slick interface and much faster (THANK GOD!) than 2.0 but it keeps crashing - this has happened 4 times already.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
So, firefox's default search providers list has 7 providers - Google, Yahoo, Answers.com, Wikipedia, eBay, Amazon and Creative Commons. I would like to remove a few. How do I do that?
I keep seeing interesting firefox extensions all over the place and have ended up downloading a whole lot of them (which, btw, I never use!).
Over the last few months my firefox performance has really deteriorated. I know there are some memory leak issues on Firefox, but I wanted to make sure that the extensions aren't slowing down my performance.
Do the extensions slow down performance? If so, what is the max. number of extensions I should add?
