Gmail's Outage Illustrates Cloud Problems, and Open Source Opportunities

Yesterday morning, Google's Gmail service went down for what the company claims was "a small subset of users." As GigaOm noted, when Gmail goes down, it disrupts many types of businesses, and it's often hard to fathom what is actually going on from Google's terse advisories. Yesterday's outage appeared to affect many users, at least judging by complaints and teeth-gnashing visible on Twitter.

This is a perfect example of why cloud computing is not as perfect as its many proponents claim it is, and why businesses will not just haphazardly keep all their data out in the cloud. Instead, I believe they will reach for combinations of in-cloud and out-of-cloud software solutions, just as many of us do individually. That concept leaves ample room for flexible, cloud-focused open source solutions.

GPhotoSpace: A Firefox Extension for Managing Photos in Gmail

Here is a very interesting little Firefox extension that caught my attention: GPhotoSpace. It requires Firefox 3 and leverages the 7GB+ of storage space that you currently get with a Gmail account for an online photo storage repository. I am constantly surprised that people still stick with the many free online storage accounts that only provide 1GB of capacity. You can get 50GB of free capacity with ADrive and the 7GB+ you get with Gmail is generous compared to other providers of free e-mail. GPhotoSpace does a nice job--within Firefox--of enhancing your Gmail account with photo album creation, uploading, and sharing features.

Mac-Gmail Contact Sync Issue: Contact details not updating in Gmail when I update them in the Mac Address Book

So I bought an Palm Pre (It Rocks!!) and they sync everything to your Google/Gmail Account (which is pretty cool!) and I use a Mac OS X Leopard (which is awesome!) and Google allows you to sync your Google Calendar and Gmail Contacts with iCal and Address Book (Sweet in theory!) BUT the darn thing isn't working for me...

First time around, my address book sync'd perfectly with my Gmail Contacts (I wiped out all my 14,000 gmail contacts and replaced it with my real contact list from my Mac). But then the problem started:

1. Any changes, updated I make to an existing contact in my Mac Address Book isn't getting updated to Gmail - this really sucks since my data always originates in my mac

2. A new contact I add to my Mac Address Book selectively gets added to my Gmail Contact list - I can't figure out why some get added and others dont???

3. Any contacts I add to Gmail directly aren't getting added to my Mac Address Book

All contacts that I add to Gmail get sync'd with my Palm Pre which is awesome but now the data isn't in sync across my different devices.

On a separate note, the Calendar syncs perfectly with iCal (both ways) and my Pre.

Any help in solving this dilema would be much appreciated!!

TIA

Sean

Thunderbird v/s Zimbra v/s Gmail (yes, I know its not Open Source!)?

I, unfortunately, like most of the workforce, have been on Outlook for longer than I can remember (actually there was a brief, blissful moment way back when I was using Lotus Notes!).

Just wanted to get your thoughts on the advantages of deploying Thunderbird v/s Zimbra for a small company (20-25 people). Google Apps is also an interesting (free) service that we are evaluating cause gmail comes bundled in there for free.

Thoughts/Suggestions?
