The Almighty Magento

Magento is one of the biggest most complex open source e-commerce application. From 10 customers I've encountered so far 4 or 5 believed Magento is the best. The other 5-6 were alternating between the other 10-15 open-source solutions.

I personally believe that Magneto it's not a good option unless you want to use Magento particularly for other reasons.

Why not Magento?

- Magento has bugs unfixed for more than 2 years

- The community support for magento is limited comparing with other solutions

- Magento prefers to have full write permissions over his folder structure

- Magento community doesn%u2019t benefit from the same amount of support comparing with the other commercial types

- Magento Go is preferred over the community version therefore Magento%u2019s staff is not focusing at all over the community version

- Major errors in Magento doesn%u2019t make it even a platform to test on. You can easily create content duplicate within your own web site by submitting a wrong sitemap to - - Google Base

- Google or other platforms constantly change their software methods in relation with - Magento but the community version doesn%u2019t get updated.

- It takes a huge amount of memory to work properly with Magento

- The Zend framework makes difficult to perform front-end changes. Difficult is not impossible - if that would%u2019ve been the only problem I would%u2019ve skipped it long time ago.

At the end of the day it%u2019s all about the UX therefore instead of working with a Magento Community platform we%u2019ve developed at BOGDAN%u2019S our own e-commerce CMS which solves all the issues above.

Great Platform, Good Community, Great Price.

I am very impressed with Magento. It has a ton of out-of-the-box functionality and is a solid choice for ecommerce. The admin section is very good, but order taking on the admin (for example by a customer service rep) is problematic. With very good developers you can have a excellent website for about $10,000.

Some Minor Limitations...

Magento  by an anonymous user on November 12th 2008 at 01:33 AM

- No support for recurring fee (subscription) products.

- No support for affiliate program

- Only one newsletter per store can be sent to customers. Extensions may change it.

- Highly fragmented system

Adopting Enterprise Open Source Software

penguin

Nagios sent me a reminder yesterday, which I finally got around to reading today, to update to the latest version of Nagios Core, 3.2.2. We were running 3.2.0, so we were a couple versions behind, so after browsing through the list of fixed bugs I thought it would be good to go ahead and upgrade. I had a meeting in fifteen minutes, and Nagios was actively monitoring servers in production. I considered for a moment waiting till after the meeting. After all, what if something went wrong during the upgrade, what if there was some unforeseen problem that caused disastrous results and caused me to miss the meeting? And then I remembered, this is Nagios. I did the upgrade, and made the meeting in time to get a cup of coffee on the way. This is how upgrades should work for everything.

Magento Nabs $22.5 Million in Equity Funding for eCommerce Software

Open source e-commerce software suite Magento got a boost this week thanks to a $22.5 million influx of cash from a round of equity funding. The company plans to use the money to boost its mobile commerce products and Software as a Service (SaaS) offerings in the coming months.

Magento is popular with big name brands like Lenovo, Vizio, and 3M, and has been downloaded over one million times. It's available in both Community (free) and Enterprise (paid) editions, but both are open source. It's also one of the most full-featured packages on the market and includes site management tools, report generators, and mobile commerce options.

Shopify vs magento for a beginner ecommerce store?

Looking for basic core functionality - list, filter, multiple card support, international support, multi-language support and also looking for all-in-one hosting packages that can be setup by the not-so-tech-savvy user. TIA for your help!

Any alternate suggestions are also welcome :)
