Can't Get Enough

This is probably the single most influential project for the internet (outside of the internet itself!). Wikipedia and all kinds of other "pedias" are powered by this, and Wikipedia's unparalleled impact on ALL internet users just shows the power of the internet and citizen media. Very cool!

MediaWiki is the leading wiki engine in the world, and many other wiki engines are written under the influence of standards initiatted by MediaWiki.


WYSWYG editing is a little sketchy and there is little support for FCKedit and TinyMCE.


Still, it towers above all other wikis out there. It is also the only wiki out there that is scale tested to allow for traffic second only to the Googles and Facebooks of the world...

The Standard

MediaWiki has essentially defined the concept of wikis and is the defacto standard for wikis across the web. It is the single most recognizable wiki application out there.


The downside is that it is more prone to WikiSPAM than other wiki apps out there. There is AntiSpam extensions, although they could be easier to install...

ScreenshotThere are many benefits to using open source software for web applications: rapid development cycles, leading functionality in many market segments, and of course the price. But actually deploying those applications can be a huge, daunting nuisance. The WordPress installation instructions, for example, may brag of taking only five minutes - but that presumes you are already running MySQL and PHP and a web server and are comfortable configuring them.
