Best Till One Million Records

I feel MySQL is the best when you have records less than 1Million rows. But if it grows more than that & if you write join queries between multiple tables then the performance will come down slowly. Especially when you do manipulations like avg, sum, percentage.

Efficient And Easy

MySql ia easy to use for web development purpose and it secure and efficient database. Easy setup and connectivity is also very feasible with opensource and mostly PHP.

Fast & Robust

Fast, robust database with a good feature set, but it lacks the bells & whistles of something like Oracle. Perfect for lightweight web apps.

Admin/security are effective and the setup of these and other features isn't over-complicated. Overall, MySQL is a pretty good choice for many "middle of the road" requirements.

More Mudslinging in the MySQL Debate

It looks like fretting over the future of MySQL has reached a fever pitch. As we've reported before, MySQL has been losing customers to competitors such as IBM as the European Commission stalls the proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle. MySQL founder Michael 'Monty' Widenius and founder of the MySQL business, has suggested that Oracle should resolve antitrust concerns over its proposed $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun by committing to sell MySQL to a suitable third party. Widenius' missive on the recommendation is online here. In it, he says EU's antitrust regulator is "absolutely right to be concerned" about the acquisition but adds that "Sun [shouldn't] suffer much longer."

Can I use WorkBench like phpmyadmin in a WAMP or XAMPP?

I have experience with phpmyadmin. Now I'd like to use WorkBench where it enables to be connected to the MySQL I use to create db/table--Modify and all that. Just like how in wamp. I realize there isn't a package like that. I am trying out RoR and I have no problems with command line, but just gonna figure out a better UI.

I came to realize that I can only import .SQL from somewhere I'd already created and saved to, probably exported from somewhere. But is there a way I can create the tables and all that from command line and at the same time be able to view the tables afterwards--Again like xampp or wamp.

How to increase performance?

Do you have any idea on improving MySQL performance when there are 10Million rows & especially when you write join queries between those tables?

Zmanda for MySQL hot backups?

I am trying to do hot backups. I can run a mysqldump while the db is running. I noticed that Zmanda allows for hot backups and am considering using that. Any thoughts? This is for a small project that uses mysql.
