Any good open source/free alternatives to Norton Ghost?

By Chuck Ben - May. 06, 2008

Looking for an app that allows for full system backup or disk image that can be saved directly to a FTP location. Have been using Norton Ghost and wanted to see what open sources alternatives are out there.

There is an Open Source Alternative called "FOG" Free Open Source Ghost,FOG is good for anyone running Windows XP and Vista with a single partition. Right now FOG can only handle a single partition on the hard disk. FOG is currently being used by many schools and small businesses who can't afford the licensing of commercial products like Ghost.

If simple backup is what you want, you should look at rsync. You can script it to zip, ftp, backup to tape, do incrementals, whatever.

Not sure if that is what you need, though.
