Can firefox take 50% of the browser market?

By Skip Victor - Mar. 12, 2008

Stupid (hypothetical) question but I wanted to see what others think about this? Firefox is clearly the better browser and with a vastly improved version 3 almost ready for GA, will Firefox EVER be in a position to take majority market share? Why?

    Sure they can. The fact that they've achieved 15-20% marketshare is testament to the fact that they can definitely keep innovating and slowly taking marketshare away from IE. But a lot of things have to fall into place in order for FF to get to 50%. For example:

    1. Steve Balmer has to get run over by a bus

    2. A food poisoning epidemic hits Redmond

    3. Dell stops selling Windows PCs

    etc. etc. etc.

    But you get the idea...

    As much as I would like to see this happen, I don't think it will. Microsoft still is the OS of choice for the vast majority of desktops today.

    In addition to having this captive market, through which they'll always bundle IE, they also are well positioned to lean on the hardware vendors to restrict FF and other competing products.

    Last but not the least, they have some smart people working up in Redmond and IE7 has been a surprisingly good product with IE8 already in the works and a lot of hoopla about open standards, etc.

    So, displacing Microsoft from its leadership position is possible but I don't think its going to happen...

    @angels - Nice One!

    I think we will see Firefox's market share increase dramatically over the next couple of years. There's only so long that a inferior product (IE) can continue to dominate on the internet. Google is a prime example of a better product dominating because the switching costs are so low - the switching cost was even lower for Google so the user migration was that much quicker...

    No??? They just went from 0-20% in a matter of a few years against MS of all people! That's the toughest part - going from 20-50% should hopefully be easier since they already have some momentum. They've also managed to move away from the uber-geek market segment as well and become mainstream. Watch that needle move up very quickly!

    Not in this lifetime and anyone who thinks otherwise should go and get his head examined!

    Why does MS still have 70-80% marketshare??? Because it's software ships on almost 100% of the pcs sold (sorry mac people - you just aren't a significant bunch)

    So when you have a captive audience and a monopolistic setting HOW HARD can it be to keep shoving your browser down someone's throat...

    No, MS has a monopoly and that isn't going to end.
