Can't write to my external HD from my mac..

By Glenn Wilson - May. 06, 2008

I have an external western digital 160gb hd that I was using with my pc. When I connect it to my mac (leopard) - it only gives me read privileges but can't write to it and its driving me crazy!

Any thing I can do to solve this?

Sounds like its in NTFS in which case there is no way to write to this drive. You can, however, format it FAT32 then, both, the PC and mac can read and write to it.

Try MacFuse - http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/ - that should allow you to mount the drive and write to it from the mac.

MacFuse Rocks! Here is a great post on how to install and use MacFuse - http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/how-to-read-and-write-ntfs-win...

MacFuse is a pain to install unless you're going to geek out on the command line...

My suggestion: move all your stuff over to the mac and then format the hard drive using the Mac Disc Utilities and dump your PC. You'll be a lot happier!! :)
