By Janet Ku - Mar. 18, 2008

This might be a dumb question but what is the difference between bounce rates and exit rates on google analytics and awstats. Its a little confusing and I couldn't find it in the online help.

BOUNCE Rate is the percentage of visitors that hit your website on a given page and don’t visit any other pages on your site.

EXIT Rate is the percentage of visitors that leave your site from a given page based on the number of visits to that page.

The visitor who EXITS your site might have visited other pages but just exited on that specific page.

Bounce Rate is a beautiful metric - If you can keep it low!!!

High bounce rate typically denotes search engine traffic because you were lucky enough to get some pages rated higher up in the google index but your site doesn't provide the user with any additional value (if any) once he gets to that page.

The basket case scenario is a High Bounce rate and a low "avg. time on page" metric which really means that, both the landing page and the (perceived value) of the site were of little/no value to the user.

So do whatever you can to keep that bounce rate low unless, of course, the bounce pages are not part of the site's main focus.
