Does abiword/openoffice support the .docx format?

By Kevin Ryan - Apr. 02, 2008

I'm not a big fan of .docx, but MS is going to make sure they shove it down our throats and, already, about 10% of the docs I receive from external sources are in the .docx format.

Do abiword/openoffice support .docx or are there any other open source word processors that do?

Trust MS to really jam you once again! I've been having problems with this on Openoffice as well. The one solution I found, albeit a painful one, is to convert docx to doc with Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack.

First download the Word viewer at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95e24c87-8732-4... Also download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4...

This will allow you to view the doc, but you can't edit it

If you right click the xdoc file I get in the open with menu microsoft open xml converter. Then it opens in OpenOffice then I can save as a normal doc file.

    PAINFULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

If you have an older version of Word - you can view .docx files by installing a plug-in you can get here - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx - then save it as a .doc and be on your way with any of the word processors out there. Probably not the "Open Source" response you were looking for, but that's what I use...

Apprently OpenOffice.org 3 will support it, but it will be a while before it will be released.

    167 days(as of this post)according to http://www.oooninja.com/2008/03/openofficeorg-30-new-features.html

Sound like they have some good features in mind...... Hopefully docx will convert better in the future though(see pics at link).

Everyone keeps suggesting the MS update but if you can't find your original MS installation disk, you won't be able to install the update. Here's to the day that Linux and Open Source software CRUSHES MicroS__t (you can fill in the blanks with your choice : 'of' or 'hi')

if you are using a windows os first you need to make sure that you can see the file type and change the file type to a .doc upon doing so you should be able to open it in abiword but Microsoft office will not recognize the file anymore.
