Good hosting providers with root access

By Jose Kent - Sep. 22, 2007

Hi - I need to set up a backup mail server. I would like to have a dedicated box in the cloud. I have looked at EC2 by Amazon, but that seems pricey for an always-on service. GoDaddy and 1and1 etc. don't really give you a lot of control, so I am not sure how good they would be. What services have you used nad how has it panned out? All I need is a backup mail server. I could run something as simple as sendmail or as advanced as Zimbra.

I bought dedicated space from http://www.sitelutions.com (Sitelutions). They gave you a cpanel account on a shared server. It had decent uptime, but the customer service was lame. Since you didn't have console access, you had to rely on their email support. Though they claim they will call you back, I tried that several times, and never got a call back when they were unable to solve my problem over email.

Another site to check out is www.linode.com. They sell hosted virtual boxes, with the cheapest one running about $20 or so a month. You get root access and a full-blown linux box to play with.
