HELP! Need a MS Paint app for the Mac!!

By Glenn Wilson - Apr. 27, 2008

I on hooked on MS Paint and SnagIT for editing screenshots by cutting and moving parts of an image, comment, draw, etc. to create mockups - Yes they are hideous but its very quick & VERY effective!! I just can't seem to figure out how to do that with a mac. There are several apps that let you take screenshots (incl. Command-Shift-3 on Leopard) but nothing that lets me move parts of the image and draw stuff like you can do on Paint/Snagit.

Any ideas??? I REALLY REALLY need this....

Try the Jing Project (www.jingproject.com) from Tech Smith (the makers of Snagit). I think it has most of what you need + a really cool interface. It still doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Snagit provides but I understand that a Mac version of Snagit is on its way.

Skitch (www.skitch.com) is an awesome tool which allows you to take and edit screenshots - link to Flickr and can be published online very easily.

Thanks! Both these look great - the Jing Project looks a lot more usable for what I'm trying to do (rough mockups) BUT the one thing that is still missing is the ability to move sections around the screen by simply highlighting an area and dragging that section. Any ideas on how I can do this?

Try Keynote, OpenOffice, or PowerPoint. It's very easy to create wireframes with slide presentation applications. Or, if you need to do full comps, try GIMP.

Haha - this is a big clunky. I use Preview to mark up the area, to cut every thing else off, save, then paste into OmniGraffle to manipulate and then proceed. Not as easy as a 'cut/move' operation, but works on the whole. Plus, once in Graffle, I can mark up and manipulate.

I would recommend Seashore. Its free (not sure if its open source) and lets you do ALMOST everything you can on SnagIt except for take scrolling screenshots.

Thanks everyone! Seashore is great but it still doesn't solve the problem of highlighting a section of the page and simply dragging it lower to create some whitespace that can be mocked up. If anyone figures that one out please let me know...

@ newmac, you can actually do that very easily using Seashore. Follow these steps:

    1. Paste the screenshot into Seashore (use Cmd+F to 'fix' the image)

    2. Using your mouse select the area of the screen you want to 'move'

    3. Use Cmd+X to 'cut' the selected area

    4. Use Cmd+V to 'paste' the selection back on the page

Now, you can move the selection anywhere on the screen and start mocking up the screenshot + have the benefit of layering... Enjoy!!
