If Microsoft buys out Yahoo, what does that mean for Open source?

By Jose Kent - May. 05, 2007

Yahoo has been built on a bunch of Open source. If Microsoft buys them out, what will happen to that? Any ideas what happened to Hotmail's Open Source? Rumor had it that they ran on linux servers, and MSFT spent a lot of time moving them off.

This is far from a done deal, so let us see if it actually goes through or not. According to the FT, this is still in the very early stages of talks. An argument could be made for the deal, since both parties have been struggling to keep up w/ GOOG. MSFT has pumped over $1B into search and really has no quality product to show, and with GOOG buying out DCLK, the heat is getting turned up by Yahoo. Even if both parties go to work, I think they will be so focused on making the largest acquisition in tech work out that getting the code moved over to the MSFT platform will be a naive thing to focus on early on. I fully expect (assuming it DOES happen) things to be fairly independent on the technical side for a while, though new initiatives, I am sure, will be strong-armed by MSFT to use Studio and .net.

Crazy as it sounds, let us not forget that microsoft does use open source. Despite doing the hackjob deal with novell, microsoft also has a deal with xensource, and xensource gets access to microsoft apis for their vm work.

Well, this might become less of an issue now that microsoft is "threatening" to Opensource some of their protocols :)

I believe Open Source would benefit from it (see http://ostatic.com/158725-blog/yahoo-is-the-reason-for-microsofts-new-op... ), Microsoft would be forced to open up a whole lot more, maybe that's why Yahoo has become even more involved in open source recently.
