Monitoring site uptime-downtime

By Nathan Lopez - Sep. 08, 2007

What services should one use to insure that a site is actually running as desired? What are the things I should be checking for to make sure my web application is actually running? I have the system health-check sent over daily, but what can I do to make sure my application is available. I know there are services out there. Any ideas of what the options are? I have an apache app, running on mysql and php.

I have used a service called Internet Seer. It is okay, and was a bit cumbersome to set up, but the price was right. They have a free service you can subscribe to. You have to agree to answer 12 surveys they send your way per year, so, that is the 'price' I guess. They do have a paid service too. www.internetseer.com

Also check out groundwork - its just nagios with a shinny gui to it but beats editing text files all day.

There is also a useful app that can be used with nagios/groundwork call WebInject
