Open Source iPhone apps might be blocked?

According to this article, it seems that Apple might not be willing to allow the proliferation of Open Source apps for the iPhone. The article speculates that Apple has exclusivity in place for existing vendors, and wants to court those vendors to continue to deliver apps. This doesn't seem to make sense, since Apple realizes the power of building on top of OSS (their Darwin core is a good example) and the ability to court developers. But, could that be changing?

    It seems that the pressure is being applied by guys like AT&T, who don't want Skype widgets ported to the iPhone. I am sure that eventually this platform is going to be opened up.

    The hacks that were in place are rendered ineffective with the new firmware update, and can render the phone useless. Apple is cracking the whip on people not 'officially' working within the system.

    Don't try and beat this system.
