OpenOffice Calc Performance Issues / Bugs

By Kunal Bagla - Apr. 12, 2008

I have just recently started using Calc. Love it as an alternative to Excel! However, I find it's slow and crashes when working with spreadsheets with more than ~ 2,000 rows at times. What has been other members experience with OpenOffice and Calc in particular? Are there any options/settings that I could change to improve the speed or prevent it from crashing when working with large files? Thanks!

When you say 'crashing', what do you mean? Does the application crash? Check the log files to see if you see anything obvious. It could be bad data, in case you are importing this data.

I routinely use Openoffice calc with spreadsheets with 15k+ rows. So, the issue might be with your particular install. I have heard there are issues with large spreadsheets due to the XML format for handling cell entries, but I haven't really experienced any real issues.

It is true. I have been using OO over Linux since 2006 so I am used to it and happy. But recently I have to manage a huge spreadsheet doing vlookup function 6000 lines over 2 tables with 60000 lines and other with 30000 lines. I have quit to copy the function to other columns in the OO because it gets hanged working for hours. Then I try on the Windows / Excel and it was workable in 1 or 2 minutes of waiting time.

I OO Calc needs more performance effort.
