PHP seems very much in vogue now - with most web hosts providing support for it. For those who have only vaguely heard of it and are not too sure what it is, this article discusses PHP and informally compares writing PHP scripts with writing CGI scripts in Perl.

PHP is a free server side scripting language. It can be built into web servers like Apache and you can use it to generate your pages dynamically. You will probably use it in situations you would have otherwise used a Perl CGI script for. PHP Without A Doubt! PHP is much better for Internet applications and/or websites. Perl is better for manipulation of files and directories as well as scripting.

Perl is a bitch to maintain. Your own code is hard enough, let alone someone elses. If you are going to ever need to add more users or scale this or even move it to a different team, you probably want to stick with PHP, Python or Ruby.

CGI is not a language. It is a legacy programming interface. You can write CGI programs in Perl, C or even Java. I have developed web site in Perl CGI and PHP. PHP is a scripting language that is used to develop a lot of modern web sites. It is the easier of the two for web development. Perl is more suited for developing system administration utilities or connecting various API and legacy systems. I use each to is strength.
