PowerTab editor for the mac

By Anna Medlin - Oct. 09, 2007

Am looking for a power tab editor for the mac so I can view power tabs present on sites like www.ultimateguitar.com. The links there are to PC-based software to browse the ptab format. What is a good tool for *NIX or mac systems?

Here are the ones I have used:

    1) GuitarTab - http://homepage.mac.com/gregrclayton/
Couldn't get it to work with power tab files downloaded from UltimateGuitar. Maybe because this is shareware and I was using an unregistered version. The software is $20+, and I couldn't justify paying that without getting to check it out first.
    2) Notepad - http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/
Large download. Free. But, was asking for root password on the mac (why?) - and did not seem to have a clean install. It seemed fairly functional, but I didnt install it.
    3) TabView - http://www.tellini.org/mac/tabview/
This worked out pretty well. Though I found some poor reviews, the version I downloaded could open ptab files, convert them to midi and play them.

Didn't actually try this because there was no free version!

There is no true PowerTabs Editor for mac.

There is a software that costs $20. This software takes a downloaded PowerTab and allows you to see it as a PDF. But you don't get any of the editing that PowerTabs Editor allows you. The only option for mac is Guitar Pro, but there is no free version excluding the trial version.

I use PowerTabs and the only way for me to get them is to Use a friends Window's PC with PowerTabs Editor installed and then CuteWriter is to a PDF and then send it via email to my mac.

If you ever find a way to get PowerTabs you should try powertabs.net

They're still fixing their site from a lawsuit thing but they should have downloads reenabled pretty soon.
