Using Truecrypt to mount a file on a Network Drive?

By Sri Chandra - Jul. 08, 2008

I keep all my documents on a server which I connect to via a Network Share. I can't make TrueCrypt work if I try to create a virtual encrypted disk in this folder (on the Network Share.)

Will TrueCrypt only make and mount files on a local drive or am I missing something?

Yes, you can mount a file on a network drive - it will still appear to be a local drive even though its mounted on the network.

Check your rights on the share. You may be restricted on the size of a file you can create. Make sure the folder doesn't have any compression or encryption attributes set. Try making the file on the local drive and copying it over to the network. Make sure you can lock the file, maybe some AV scanner is running on the server. Try mounting the file with the -f option.
