VLC keeps stopping, skipping, stalling, freezing, etc. etc. etc. It is sucking for some reason!

By Jonas Stein - Jul. 22, 2009

VLC has been giving me a lot of problems off late. Whenever I'm watching typical DVD rip copies ~ 700 MB in size, although some of them can be as large as 1.5-2 Gb, it starts skipping every few minutes which makes the entire experience very annoying.

I have a Macbook Pro - 2Gb RAM, 250 Gb HDD which is 60+% unused. I've defrag'd my drive but that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem and it has to do with caching. I'd also recommend upgrading to the latest VLC version - 1.0.

Here's what you need to do and I think it should solve your problem:

    1- Open Preferences in VLC

2- In the bottom left corner press All

    3- Expand Input /Codecs

    4- Expand Access Modules

    5- Select File

6- change the caching value to for example 1000.

If you have installed all proper codecs then your problem is in spyware or viruses.

They are probably eating memory resources which are creating your problems. Try to clean your computer with avast or any other spyware removal tool.

Ohh didnt notice you have macbook, i think then you dont have spyware, but try to see if something is eating your resources and check while playing a movie there are some hard drive activity.

    Then just stop that programs.

You can just try to play vlc movie and stop everything else.

@Julio - I tried it and it improved the performance but it still freezes up occasionally. Should I be increasing that number or is there something else I should be doing?
