What's the criteria for sending work offshore?

What do US businesses look for when outsourcing to an offshore software or web company? What's on the top of the criteria list? Price? Communication skills? Past clients? Would it help if the offshore firm had a presence in the US?

    All of the above. Depends on what you are looking to get done. We've outsourced, and it has been a combination of skill and price.

    Price should be the last variable to consider - figure everything else first - if the skill level, processes, communication, expertise, reference client list, etc. isn't up to snuff - Price doesn't really matter. The focus should be on time to market and quality - if you can crack the code on these 2 fronts - everything else is just details...

    Start with a prototype - should be limited to 4-6 weeks based on which you'll be able to assess the skill level, turn-around time and management overhead. that should give you a good starting point and enough information to decide if you want to continue down that path.

    ROI is Key Indicator for any Model , it depends on


    1) Business Model how offshore company wants to support ( Process, Delivery Methodology, Status Reproting )


    2) Skill Level of the resorces


    3) Ease of communication between the offshore and onsite team


    4) working in Colloboration Mode


    5) Price Card
