XWiki Research

By Van - Jun. 25, 2008

I am now researching XWiki for a company who might implement it.

But there is some questions that need to be answered in order to compare between different wikis. Any input on these questions will be appreciated.

1. Is it easy to use or cumbersome?

2. Is the user interface user friendly?

3. Can edits, views and other types of activity be logged and reviewed easily?

4. Can blogs and chats be stored?

5. Can blogs be monitored?

6. Can blogs be reviewed before being published?

7. Can activities be tracked by groups and individuals?

8. Can the content be exported easily to other content management sites?(i.e. Sharepoint)

9. If blogs and discussions are supported then can they be referenced in articles?

10. What are the space limitations? (i.e. Page limitations)

11. Ability to mark documents as confidential, with different status (i.e. complete) and with different priority

12. What type of formatting is allowed? Are there any formatting restrictions?

13. Does it allow importing of external documents to create a new document or to add as a new version to an existing one?

14. Can multiple users edit the same page at the same time?

15. Does it have the ability to form groups like project groups and teams to collaborate on the team?

Thanks.

    Hello.

So, 'easy' is relative. What is the skill of the person who will be administering the wiki? If you have a sys admin, some of these tasks might be easier or more difficult, depending on the environment.

    Allow me to explain:

    a) XWiki uses a Hypersonic database. Your admin may or may not have skill here. If you wish to use a MySQL db, do you have the necessary skills to set that up?

    b) Managing a MySQL db is rather easy, and might be the preferred choice for your admin since you can back up the database on schedule and, depending on the env within which you are deploying, this might be preferred. The admin might want to use pre-existing management and monitoring tools.

Your admin might _prefer_ a 'back-end' way of managing the database, instead of an app-specific way of backing up (not sure how the hypersonic experience is), which might not be scriptable.

Just a few things to consider.

Looking at the tool, it seems to have both options.

Easy really depends on what skills can be brought to bear...

    Hope this helps.
