ApacheCon Series: Sourcesense's CEO Weighs In On Open Development

The ApacheCon conference, which marked the 10th anniversary of the Apache Software Foundatoin, wrapped up a few days ago, and there were lots of highlights, including recognition from California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Oakland, California mayor Ron Dellums. In conjunction with the big event, we ran a series of guest posts from key players at the foundation, found here, here, and here. For our final guest post in the ApacheCon series, Gianugo Rabellino, CEO of Sourcesense (a leading open source integrator in Europe, and agile computing consultancy) weighs in on open development. ApacheCon US 2009 is Approaching: Want a Discount?

Apache is without a doubt one of the most influential open source platforms available, and the Apache web server has continued to maintain dominant market share in recent years. Other Apache projects are also flourishing. From November 2nd to 6th, at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, California, The Apache Software Foundation is hosting ApacheCon US 2009. The event will feature educational sessions, a hackathon, a solid roster of speakers, and more.

At Hadoop Summit, Yahoo! Announces its Tested Distribution

At today's Hadoop Summit in Silicon Valley, Yahoo! announced the availability of the Yahoo! Distribution of Hadoop, a source-only version of Apache Hadoop that Yahoo! uses within its own search engine. Hadoop, of course, is an open source software framework that helps process very large data sets, and is widely used in large-scale data mining applications as well as in search tools at sites like Facebook and many others. For developers and users interested in Hadoop, it's worth noting that the Yahoo! Acquia Gets New CEO, Extends Drupal Searches, and More

Acquia, which offers a commercially supported version of the open source Drupal content management system is out with a series of announcements today. The company has a new CEO, Tom Erickson, who was formerly CEO of Systinet, which he sold to Mercury Interactive. Acquia has also announced a public beta of Acquia Search, a hosted service, as well as cloud-based Drupal hosting, and Drupal stack installers for Windows and the Mac.


Apache Holds Steady Market Share, Still Dominating Microsoft IIS

Last March, we noted a decline in the dominance of the Apache web server, based on market research numbers from Netcraft, but we also noted that Apache continues to be much more popular than Microsoft IIS. Netcraft is out with new numbers for January of this year, which show Apache's market share growing about one percent for the month and staying very steady at about 50 percent of the web server market. Meanwhile, Microsoft's IIS is losing share. Here are some thoughts on Netcraft's findings.
