Fedora 12 Team Taking Codename Suggestions

fedora

It seems like just yesterday Fedora 11's development team codenamed it's bouncing bundle of joy Leonidas (after the Spartan King, of course). Contributing members of the Fedora community are putting their heads together again to come up with a codename for Fedora 12, and if you've got a good suggestion you've only got until May 23rd to shout it out.

Fedora Project Taking Ideas For Next Release Name

FedoraDistribution naming schemes are one of the more humorous aspects of the open source community. Ubuntu uses an adjective followed by an animal name (Intrepid Ibex, Jaunty Jackalope), while Debian names releases after characters in the movie Toy Story (Sarge, Etch, Lenny). Fedora's method is a bit more obscure, but no less clever.

The Fedora Project is calling for suggestions on what to name Fedora 11. If you're a contributing member of the Fedora community and want to take a stab at bestowing a title on the distro's next release, here what you need to know.

Support Linux, Buy a T-Shirt

Most people who attend an open source conference typically walk away with t-shirts, stickers and other accessories branded with the logo of their favorite distro or open source project. Though the final version isn't slated for release until November of this year, developers are calling on the community to put this new version though its paces and offer up some feedback.

Developers Make a Good Call With Fedora Talk

While the rest of the world is knee-deep in webinars, Skype-based teleconferences, and other Web 2.0 -ish forms of real time communication, most of the Linux community still relies on IRC, wikis, and opt-in email lists to get things done. At FUDCon last month, the Fedora community announced a new way of helping members and developers communicate with each other: Fedora Talk

NASA Embraces Open Source for Space Missions

By the time you read this, Space Shuttle Endeavour will have left the launchpad at Florida's Kennedy Space Center and will be winging its way to the International Space Station to deliver new ISS components. As millions of people around the world watch the mission unfold on live video feeds captured by NASA's Telescience Lab, Fedora will be running the servers that distribute footage to Houston's Mission Control and NASA TV. In fact, various iterations of Fedora turn up all over Kennedy Space Center, including servers that manage data processing -- and even the countdown clock.
