Open Source Business Intelligence Software On the Rise

When we recently covered the results of North Bridge Partners' 2009 Future of Open Source Survey, I noted that many of the respondents said that they see open source Business Intelligence (BI) applications as highly likely to cause disruption in the next five years. For many people, though, this application category is murky and hard to understand. What do the applications do, and what can you get in the free, open source offerings?

Brian Gentile, CEO of Jaspersoft, on Consumerization of Information

The Open Source Business Conference (OSBC) is rapidly approaching, to be held March 24th and 25th at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The conference will include much discussion on the future of open source. In preparation, OStatic has been? running a series of guest posts on this theme, featuring thought leaders from top open source projects. We checked in with Dries Buytaert, founder of the Drupal content management system, and co-founder of Acquia. Martin Schneider, director of product marketing for SugarCRM, weighed in on the open cloud, and Novell VP Justin Steinman wrote about open source and mass customization. Certified Open Source: Why It Matters

I read with interest this item from ZDNet on Intel getting open source mojo through its hookup with SpikeSource. If you're unfamiliar with SpikeSource, see our story here.ᅠ SpikeSource has a unique business model that straddles open source and closed source, and is headed up by one of the darlings of the dot-com boom: Kim Polese. SpikeSource is partially funded by Intel Capital, and it powers Intel's Certified Solutions Program which tests and certifies ISV (independent software vendor) applications against security, interoperability and performance metrics. SpikeSource's Solutions Factory platform is used for such tests. Why is this hookup between SpikeSource and Intel good news for open source?

Open Source Video Interviews From TalkTech

Earlier this week, we covered Jaspersoft's new version of its open source Business Intelligence Suite. It's been getting a fair amount of notice, and I enjoyed watching Kristin White's TalkTech video interview with Brian Gentile, Jaspersoft's CEO. He has good advice for entrepeneurs interested in building a community of developers, and talks about the challenges of being a commercial open source company (Jaspersoft's applications are subscription-based.) The TalkTech site has quite a few other interviews of interest to open sourcers. Here are a couple of more recommended examples.

New Moves from Acquia, Jaspersoft, KnowledgeTree and More

As the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco winds down, it's worth looking in at the news out of the get-together. Lots of pundits were on hand, and the conference brought several new announcements.

Acquia representatives at OSBC said they are on track to deliver a value-added social publishing system named Carbon based on the Drupal open source content management system (OStatic is built on Drupal).
