Why Canonical Should Imitate Apple's Early Playbook

One of the most indelible images in the history of personal computing came in 1984, when Apple Computer delivered its famous television ad depicting a running heroine throwing a hammer (read, a Mac) at a looming Big Brother-like specter representing IBM. The ad was directed by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner, and is a classic example of how Apple has always sought to reach those interested in alternative technology solutions that may not be market share leaders. On the open source front today, Canonical could do big things with Ubuntu by imitating Apple's early playbook.

Elive 2.0 Brings Enlightenment to the Desktop

Elive BoxAll good things come to those who wait. For example, the Elive Linux distribution 2.0 release. It's been nearly three years since the last major release of Elive, but the project has finally gotten the 2.0 release out the door with tons of improvements and new features.

Elive is a Debian-based Linux distro that uses the Enlightenment e17 desktop environment. The distro is well-suited for older computers and netbooks, as it has minimal hardware requirements. Elive can get by on a 100MHz CPU and 64MB of RAM, though the project recommends at least 128 MB of RAM and a 300MHz CPU. No 3D card required to get the full effects of the Enlightenment GUI.

The Linux Business That Troubled Novell May Be Headed In New Directions

As we reported yesterday, hedge fund Elliott Associates L.P. has made an unsolicited $2 billion offer to buy Novell, one of only two remaining large, U.S. public companies focused on open source. In November of last year, we were already noting that both Red Hat's and Novell's pummeled stock prices, complemented by huge cash positions, made them ripe acquisition targets. Red Hat bounced back since then, but Novell never did, and whether the Elliott offer or another one comes through,it's looking unlikely that Novell will remain an independent company. How will this impact the tech industry, Linux, and open source?

Embiggen Your Brain with gbrainy

Fans of logic puzzles, memory games, and other brain-stretching exercises should check out the latest release of gbrainy. Gbrainy 1.40 came out at the end of February with some new translations, mouse support, and two new logic games to entertain your brain.

What's gbrainy? It's a package for GNOME that includes a set of games that test reasoning and thinking skills, memory, verbal abilities, and how well you can do mental calculations. And they do challenge you, as anyone who's tried gbrainy will tell you, the tests aren't easy ? but they are addictive. A gbrainy session can easily stretch into hours if you're not careful (and if you enjoy that sort of thing).
