iFolder, Great for Fans of Dropbox, Source Code, and Lots of Control

For the past few weeks, off and on, I've heard some low-level, excited buzzing about iFolder. What is it? Think of it as an open source Dropbox service that lives on your servers under your jurisdiction, with a few added perks.

iFolder isn't new, per se, but it hasn't seen an updated source code release since 2007. Late last week, Novell, which sponsors the iFolder project, announced that iFolder 3.7.2 client and server packages -- as well as source code -- were available for download. The new release runs on Mac, Windows (including Vista) and Linux 32- and 64- bit environments. The push is now on to keep iFolder a very community-driven initiative.



Novell CEO Stresses Interoperability, Data Centers for Suse Linux 11

While Novell recently reported down earnings due in large part to shortfalls in its Linux business, Matt Asay notes that the company remains very focused on Linux. He singles out CEO Ron Hovsepian's comments today at the Open Source Business Conference on Suse Linux 11 and data centers, Novell's efforts to make Suse Linux appropriate for netbooks, and more. The thing that really caught my eye is something I wrote about recently: Novell's focus on interoperability.?


Novell/IDC Survey Reports Interest in Linux Interoperability, Virtualization

Fresh on the heels of disappointing quarterly earnings that were largely pinned on underperformance for its Linux business, and a small round of layoffs, Novell and market research firm IDC are out with survey results on Linux interest and adoption. The respondents were executives in the IT industry. There are several notable findings in the survey, including strong interest from respondents in interoperability between Linux and Windows. Here are some of the key results.


Novell's Earnings Down--Linux Business Disappoints

Novell has reported its financial performance for the November-to-January quarter, and the results aren't pretty. Earnings dropped 36 percent to $11 million, compared to $17 million in the year-earlier quarter. Sales fell short of analysts' expectations, although the earnings were very slightly above expectations. Novell's CEO Ron Hovsepian didn't just pin the results on the economy. He said invoicing was below our expectations in this weak economy,? and he noted that our Linux performance did not meet our expectations. What lies ahead for Novell's Linux business?


Novell Delivers Moonlight 1.0 for Rich Media on Linux

During both the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and President Obama's inauguration, many Linux users were seriously miffed that Microsoft's Silverlight rich application plug-in was required for viewing. Today, the Mono Project, one of Novell's open source initiatives, has announced the availability of the Moonlight 1.0 Firefox extension, which is an open source implementation of Microsoft Silverlight for Linux and Unix platforms. According to Novell: Moonlight provides the platform Linux users need to use Silverlight and Windows Media content. In combination with Banshee, a Novell-sponsored project to produce an open source media player, Moonlight is part of a complete multimedia solution on Linux. Some questions are being raised about Moonlight's license, though.

Moonlight 1.0 Beta Available

Not long ago the Moonlight development team announced that the Linux Silverlight adaptation was drawing ever nearer to the 1.0 release. On December 1st, the Moonlight 1.0 beta version was released.

The Moonlight beta installs easily, and works quite well (though some sites respond better than others, this seems to hold true with Silverlight in a native Windows environment as well). The few hiccups I encountered during installation had more to do with network congestion and user error than the application itself.



Moonlight 1.0 Beta 1 Nears Rollout, Calls for 2.0 Contributors

The Moonlight team has announced that the first beta release of Moonlight 1.0 is nearly ready for testing. Moonlight is an open source implementation of Microsoft's Silverlight product.

The project hopes to get new contributors to come aboard as it finalizes the 1.0 release and pushes forward to Moonlight 2.0. Developer Chris Toshok points to some of the upcoming development tasks, and says that because the 2.0 release will be larger and features numerous self-contained subsystems, developers have more opportunity to make a solid impact on the project.

Interviews: Four Open Source Questions for Microsoft

Recently, I got the opportunity to pose a few questions to key people involved with open source efforts at Microsoft, including Sam Ramji (the recently promoted head of Microsoft's open source and Linux efforts), Ori Amiga (Microsoft Group Product Manager, Live Developer Platform), and Susan Hauser (General Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Licensing).
