If you?re a dedicated Firefox user, you probably collect the best extensions for the browser on a regular basis. Pencil is an extension for drawing and graphical user interface prototyping that we noted won an award from Mozilla itself. It really is a fantastic tool for visually expressing ideas on the fly. Firefox 3.1 Facing Late Arrival; Will It Ship With TraceMonkey?

Digital Arts Online has a thorough break down of some of the snags the Firefox development team has encountered as it continues work on the browser's 3.1 release. TraceMonkey, the JavaScript engine that's responsible for the browser's performance boost, seems to be what's holding its actual release back.

According to the forum posts the article points to, both Firefox developers and those focusing specifically on TraceMonkey agree that a decision has to be made -- but whether it's better to release Firefox 3.1 without TraceMonkey, release Firefox with TraceMonkey disabled by default, or give the developers a set amount of time before making the decision at all -- might be a sticking point.

Mozilla and Skype Take Aim at Apple's Closed iPhone Policies

As noted by The Register, Mozilla and Skype are lining up behind The Electronic Frontier Foundation's campaign to ease restrictions on iPhone jailbreaking. Both Skype and Mozilla have filings in to the U.S. Copyright Office arguing that the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) should be changed to allow mobile phone users to choose to modify their handsets, applications and carriers. It's an argument for openness, and I'm surprised that more people aren't chastising Apple for its closed policies regarding both jailbreaking and iPhone application development.

Mozilla's Bespin Delivers Open, Collaborative Cloud App Development

Mozilla Labs is out with a new project, dubbed Bespin, aimed at allowing collaborative programming, HTML coding, and development out in the cloud. Mozilla is calling it an open, extensible web-based framework for code editing, and it's released under the Mozilla Public License. Bespin is only an initial prototype at this point, but it's part of a growing effort to deliver open source cloud infrastructure tools. ?Many cloud applications depend on their online hosted status to attract users to collaborate, so why shouldn't development of cloud applications be collaborative and online as well? Open source tools for the cloud may play an important part in obstructing lock-in strategies from cloud service providers.

Europe Invites Mozilla to Participate in Microsoft Antitrust Case

This past weekend, Mozilla's Mitchell Baker put up a blog post on the European Commission's preliminary conclusion that ?Microsoft?s tying of Internet Explorer to the Windows operating system harms competition between web browsers, undermines product innovation and ultimately reduces consumer choice.? The EC has been considering forcing Microsoft to make browsers other than Internet Explorer available in copies of Windows pre-installed on new computers. Now, the EC has granted Mozilla the right to join its antitrust case against Microsoft. Does Mozilla have a good case to make, though?
