LinkedIn and MySpace Bet On Lucene Open Source Search

As Matt Asay reports, the LinkedIn social network has just upgraded its people search features, based on the open source search project Lucene. And, as Ars Technica discussed in June, MySpace recently updated its search features using Lucene as well --including making contributions to Lucene. OStatic's own search features are powered by Lucene, and many leaders of web sites, blogs and web applications should look into this extremely powerful open source information retrieval engine.

Facebook: Is it Going Open Source?

While nobody at Facebook is commenting on the rumor yet, TechCrunch is reporting that Facebook will turn the Facebook Platform into an open source project. TechCrunch's Michael Arrington reports that he has heard confirmation from multiple sources that the year-old platform will go open source, and that application developers will easily be able to migrate their Facebook applications to other social networks. If the rumor pans out, this could be good news for open source. UPDATE: Soon after this post went up, TechCrunch reported that Facebook confirmed this story as correct.

MySpace Developer Platform Opens Up its Beta

Following in the footsteps of Facebook, which opened up its social network to developers about a year ago, MySpace is now launching its own developer platform (in a beta version), and it already features an application gallery for users. This can't really be described as a huge open source event--it's more akin to MySpace widgetizing--but it is built on open protocols and is already leading to freely available new applications.
