Google releases open source NX server. Amid the fanfare of the Chrome OS announcement, Google quietly released an open source NX server, dubbed Neatx, for remote desktop display.

HP releases $500 Linux netbook onto Aussie market. This week sees the Australian launch of the Mini 110, which HP is offering with both Ubuntu and Windows XP.

OpenSolaris Arrives in a New Version

In conjunction with its CommunityOne event, Sun Microsystems has announced a new version of its OpenSolaris operating system. Dubbed OpenSolaris 2009.06, it features networking improvements, storage management and virtualization features. OpenSolaris Coming to Toshiba Laptops--Continuing a Trend

Slowly but surely, major laptop vendors are taking to the idea of shipping systems with pre-loaded open source operating systems. The latest case in point is Toshiba--one of the longest-standing players in the market for portable computers--and its new plan to pre-install Sun Microsystems' OpenSolaris on its laptops. The machines are supposed to ship in early 2009, and will join several new Linux-based systems that Dell is shipping, and many Linux-based netbooks arriving from various hardware manufacturers. Will this trend continue?

Interview: Rich Green, Executive VP of Software, Sun Microsystems

Sun Microsystems has been steadily shifting its business strategy toward open source for quite a while now. From delivering OpenSolaris, to pushing ahead with MySQL, to virtualization efforts, open source is driving many parts of Sun's business. We caught up with Rich Green, executive vice president of software at Sun, to ask him about what benefits the company is seeing, and what lies ahead.


Open Source and the Fall of VMware


The Net is abuzz today with the news of VMware's president and CEO Diane Greene leaving which has also caused a huge plunge in VMware's stock. Our sister site has a good story on the possible reasons, which may be attributable to politics within the company. VMware, of course, built a huge market capitalization on the back of its virtualization technology. As ZDNet has suggested, I think the problems at VMware may have to do with increased competition from open source virtualization offerings--and also from operating systems, especially Windows.

Sun Delivers OpenSolaris, and Amazon Has the Hookup

As Sun Microsystems' JavaOne conference kicks off this week, along with its CommunityOne open source conference, Sun and the OpenSolaris community have jointly announced the availability of the OpenSolaris operating system. It's a fully open source open, community-driven operating system, based on Sun's Solaris kernel. You can download it free now. There is more news out of Sun today, too, including a hookup between Amazon and the OpenSolaris community, focused on cloud computing applications. Can this OS compete with Linux rivals?
