Netbooks Continue to Proliferate--Who's Winning?

As netbooks proliferate--based on both Linux and Windows--reviews are flowing in for many of the hottest models. Lenovo's IdeaPad S10, which, questionably, runs Windows and not Linux at this point, has been taken through its paces at Laptop Magazine (see the video). As a long-time user of ThinkPad notebooks, I'm not surprised to hear that they love the keyboard. Meanwhile, reviews are lukewarm for Sylvania's G Netbook Meso, featuring the Ubuntu Netbook Remix operating system. How do these compare to the Asus and Acer netbooks?

Where is Rodney Dangerfield when we need him? There are some heated messages flying around in the Ubuntu forums because NBC has announced that it will offer its online video coverage of the Beijing Olympics to Internet Explorer and Firefox users on the Mac and Windows, but not to Linux browser users. This means the considerable amount of online video available to other users is out of reach of the Linux crowd, writes one forum poster. You wonder why they'd want to kiss off 2%-3% of the desktops, writes another. Would it really be so difficult to offer video to users of Firefox on Linux?

Are Ubuntu Users Getting the Best of Both Worlds?

For a community distribution, Ubuntu sure knows how to preen itself to look good for the business world. Canonical hasn't exactly kept its plans to get on IT managers' radar a secret, but the number of enterprise-ready applications for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS that are slowly becoming available in the Ubuntu Partner repository is getting hard to ignore.

LinuxWorld Day Two Gets Rolling

The LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco is open for day two, and the announcements are coming fast and furious. Motorola's ROKR EM30 has been announced, making it the 22nd handset based on the LiMo Foundation's mobile Linux platform. Meanwhile, new security and Wi-Fi monitoring tools are being unveiled. Here are some of the top new arrivals.
