Open Source Platforms Arrive On IBM's Most Vulnerable List

IBM Internet Security Systems is out with its X-Force 2008 Mid-Year Trend Statistics report. This is an extremely exhaustive look at security vulnerabilities in both proprietary and open source software. It highlights trends in malware and phishing, and ranks vendors, open source projects, and even languages by security breach disclosures. With the rise of open source software, including much more adoption in enterprises, it's no surprise to see some open source platforms arrive on the top ten most vulnerable list, including one in second place, sandwiched between Apple and Microsoft. Which open source projects qualified--for the first time?

SourceForge's Community Choice Awards: Winners Named

We covered the SourceForge Community Choice Awards announcement in early July, and now the winners have been named. This marks the first year when SourceForge's awards for the best open source projects have been open to all open source projects. OpenOffice is far and away the big winner, but I was pleased to see some lesser known projects get recognition, too. Here, below the fold, are the winners.

EnterpriseDB's Survey Results: Interesting, But I Have to Wonder....

Today at the OSCON conference in Oregon, open source database company EnterpriseDB announced the results of its 2008 Open Source Database Survey. It collected the opinions of 500 corporate IT leaders on enterprise adoption of open source databases. There is an executive summary of the findings available as a free PDF download.? EnterpriseDB focuses as a company on PostgreSQL, so it is calling out many of the findings from the survey related to that product, but there are other points of interest. In a few cases, I had to question the results. For example, only nine percent of respondents said they prefer commercial databases to open source ones.

5 Resources for Digging Into Linux

Looking around for good Linux applications or perhaps some tutorials? You'll find many applications in our database here at OStatic (just click on Software and enter your request in our Search field), and I've also been looking into some useful new resources. Tuxsoftware is an interesting new pit-stop. On its home page today, you'll find featured applications such as Flyback (similar to Apple's Time Machine backup utility), and Pidgin (instant messaging). You can also search for applications, although I don't see any citation of how many there are in the site's database.

The Finance Sector: Open Source Rising

This morning I sat back and noticed the increasing rate at which I am getting notices about open source software making big headway in the trading and financial services industries. For example, the folks at GroundWork Open Source--which does commercial open source and network management software--sent me notice of these brand new customers of theirs: Prager Sealy, Commonwealth Financial, National Australia Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Stark Investments and Sterling Savings Bank. Also, this post from The Linux Foundation provides an eye-popping look at big trading exchanges now running Linux. One of the big drivers for this trend, I think, is how even minute reductions in the cost of transactions can be huge cost savers.
