Recently, I got the opportunity to pose a few questions to key people involved with open source efforts at Microsoft, including Sam Ramji (the recently promoted head of Microsoft's open source and Linux efforts), Ori Amiga (Microsoft Group Product Manager, Live Developer Platform), and Susan Hauser (General Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Licensing). They offered up some thought-provoking input on what open source needs, Novell, China, Live Mesh, and other topics. I thank them for taking the time, and please read on for their comments.

The rumors were true: Microsoft is opening up its Office 2007 suite of productivity applications to full support for other formats, including Open Document Format (ODF). Earlier this year, Microsoft was under fire for pushing its own Open Office XML set of formats as an international standard, when many people in the open source community wanted support for the more strictly open ODF standard. Microsoft officials have now also said that Office will fully support PDF format and XML Paper Specification (XPS). The new formats will arrive in Service Pack 2 for Office 2007, early next year, and some translators will arrive before then.

Multitouch display technology has been at the center of many a geek's attention since the release of the iPhone almost a year ago. The ability to combine computer vision, projector display technology and the electronics to control it all had been the provenance of big companies and university research labs. Now Stefan Hechenberger and Addie Wagenknecht of New York based NOR_/D have put together an open source alternative called Cubit. This is worth taking a gander at.
SourceForge, which is behind several media properties including Slashdot, SourceForge.net, Linux.com and Freshmeat.net, is announcing today that it is including OpenID functionality in its SourceForge.net website. OpenID, of course, is an open, decentralized framework for handling digital identities and authentication. It eliminates the need for multiple usernames online. Many big companies, including Google, Yahoo, IBM, and Microsoft (OpenID can be used with Windows CardSpace) employ OpenID. SourceForge's move, and the extent to which it's embracing OpenID, makes it one of the largest implementers yet.
Sun Microsystems officials are maintaining that MySQL will remain fully open source but does that mean just the kernel?.....

After several months of discussion and speculation, the Microsoft-Yahoo buyout deal is apparently off. At least, that's what both Microsoft and Yahoo announced over the weekend. There is some speculation that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made his announcement in order to topple Yahoo's share price, in order to make another offer at a lower price. But for now, Yahoo is saying that they have come out of this fight stronger and more focused than before. Does this mean that we will see a change in Yahoo's commitment to open source?
