Moblin 2.0: Moving from Ubuntu to Fedora?

As our sister blog jkOnTheRun is reporting, there could be a change coming for Intel's mobile-friendly Linux platform dubbed Moblin. The next version of it is due on August 19th, and is apparently switching from Ubuntu to Fedora. Reportedly, the reason for the switch is the Package Manager, which in Fedora lets developers include and use license information data. Check out jkOnTheRun's coverage for more.

OSCON Gets Rolling in Oregon

OSCON, the huge annual open source convention run by O'Reilly opens today in Portland, Oregon and continues through the end of the week. OStatic will provide updates throughout the week, and we've been pre-briefed on several interesting announcements. This year's conference includes a number of high-profile speakers, including Google's Chris DiBona and Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth. Roberto Galoppini has posted a good guide to the key events at the conference, and you can find more here and in the rest of this story.

5 Resources for Digging Into Linux

Looking around for good Linux applications or perhaps some tutorials? You'll find many applications in our database here at OStatic (just click on Software and enter your request in our Search field), and I've also been looking into some useful new resources. Tuxsoftware is an interesting new pit-stop. On its home page today, you'll find featured applications such as Flyback (similar to Apple's Time Machine backup utility), and Pidgin (instant messaging). You can also search for applications, although I don't see any citation of how many there are in the site's database.
