Upgrading Your Linux Box? Read Up on SELinux, and Improve Security

I just spent several days helping to upgrade an organization's servers from Red Hat Enterprise 3 to the latest version, Red Hat Enterprise 5.2. One of the most important, and impressive, issues we dealt with during this upgrade was SELinux, or security-enhanced Linux. SELinux offers a great deal of functionality, and helps to protect Linux boxes from a variety of threats. It forces system administrators to learn a new vocabulary, as well as permissions, logfiles, and programs with which they were previously unfamiliar. Fortunately, there are many good tutorials for SELinux on the Web.

Netbooks Continue to Proliferate--Who's Winning?

As netbooks proliferate--based on both Linux and Windows--reviews are flowing in for many of the hottest models. Lenovo's IdeaPad S10, which, questionably, runs Windows and not Linux at this point, has been taken through its paces at Laptop Magazine (see the video). As a long-time user of ThinkPad notebooks, I'm not surprised to hear that they love the keyboard. Meanwhile, reviews are lukewarm for Sylvania's G Netbook Meso, featuring the Ubuntu Netbook Remix operating system. How do these compare to the Asus and Acer netbooks?

Would a VMware Acquisition of Red Hat Go Anywhere?

Is there any chance that virtualization giant VMware might have its eyes on Red Hat as an acquisition? This article reports that VMware CEO Diane Greene, ousted by her board in July, had set up meetings with Red Hat in part to position VMware as friendly to open source and possibly as a prelude to a buyout discussion, according to a person familiar with the conversations. While both companies have declined to comment, the prospect could make a lot of sense for VMware for several reasons. Here's why.

No Buy-In for Access Linux: A Bad Sign for Mobile Linux?

Are we about to see more competitors pulling out of the mobile Linux race? Recently, researchers at J. Gold and Associates produced a report predicting that Google's Linux-based Android platform would merge with the new and open source mobile platform from Symbian,? pitting two huge Goliaths (Google and Nokia) against any Davids who might dare to produce Linux-based handsets. While it's pure speculation that that might ever happen, a sign of weakening confidence on the mobile Linux front has appeared: The Access Linux Platform's initial and only smartphone project was recently rubbished. Orange is bailing on its plan to deliver a Samsung smartphone running Access Linux.

Felton, California Residents Eschew Proprietary Software

It takes a village? How about a whole city? How about 100 cities? I enjoyed this item from LinuxInsider about residents of Felton, California who pledged to go proprietary software-free for at least a week. If you've ever been to Felton, which has a Santa Cruz-like countercultural flavor, this pledge makes sense. Felton isn't alone, though. As LinuxInsider reports, similar plans are in place for towns in Oregon and New Mexico, and 100 towns in Italy.

Linux Users on NBC's Olympics Videos: We Don't Get No Respect

Where is Rodney Dangerfield when we need him? There are some heated messages flying around in the Ubuntu forums because NBC has announced that it will offer its online video coverage of the Beijing Olympics to Internet Explorer and Firefox users on the Mac and Windows, but not to Linux browser users. This means the considerable amount of online video available to other users is out of reach of the Linux crowd, writes one forum poster. You wonder why they'd want to kiss off 2%-3% of the desktops, writes another. Would it really be so difficult to offer video to users of Firefox on Linux?
