Firebug Group Releases 1.2

John Resig, a member of Mozilla's Firebug development team, announced yesterday that the final version of Firebug 1.2 had been released. Firebug is a debugger for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that sits within the Firefox Web browser. It has become an essential tool for Web developers, particularly those who use the modern technique known as Ajax ( asynchronous JavaScript and XML ).



Apple's 2.1 Update Shuts Down OpenClip Copy-and-Paste

Only a few days ago, we covered OpenClip, an open source copy-and-paste system designed to fill in for the complete absence of one on Apple's iPhone. Now, in one of the fastest kill shots in recent memory, Apple has shut it down with its new 2.1 firmware. OpenClip's founder has some interesting thoughts on the whole kerfuffle.


Marketing Isn't Enough

Our own Joe Brockmeier made some great points recently about why free isn't enough. He says that smaller open source projects need to be just as mindful as the larger companies when it comes to PR and marketing because free isn't enough to carry the day. That's true, but PR isn't enough either.

Interview: Ken Drachnik on Sun's GlassFish OSS App Server

Last week, as part of a dual-promotion between OStatic and Sun Microsystems, OStatic introduced a program through which Java developers can get a year of free hosting for applications powered by the open source GlassFish Application Server and MySQL--both from Sun.? GlassFish is an app server project for the Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) platform, and is based on source code donated by Sun and Oracle. Its servlet container employs a derivative of Apache Tomcat. We checked in with Ken Drachnik, marketing manager for open source software infrastructure products at Sun and a co-founder of GlassFish, about GlassFish and open source issues.


The FLA Gets Some Traction

Have you ever heard of the Fiduciary Licence Agreement - the FLA? No, it's not an alterative to other free and open source license agreements that you're probably already familiar with, like the GPL, Mozilla License, and BSD License. Rather, it's an adjunct to any copyleft license, designed to help ensure the long-term survivability of free software projects. With the announcement last week that KDE has adopted an FLA, this notion may take on new prominence.


Tracemonkey to Boost JavaScript Performance in Firefox 3.1

JavaScript has become an increasingly important part of the Web application ecosystem. JavaScript is the key to many of the Web's most interesting applications, using the Ajax paradigm ( Asynchronous JavaScript and XML ). This has led to a renaissance in the use of JavaScript, as well as a flurry of libraries aimed at making it easier to use and cross-browser compatible. It was thus with a great deal of excitement that several JavaScript developers announced late last week that a new JavaScript engine, known as Tracemonkey, will be a part of Firefox 3.1 when it is released. The Tracemonkey engine is dramatically faster than the existing JavaScript engine, with some actions running 20 times faster.



Free Isn't Enough

A key challenge faced by any open source project is getting mindshare. Itﾒs a truism that if decision makers donﾒt know about a product, they wonﾒt consider it. If they donﾒt consider it, theyﾒll select other approaches. There are too many people shouting out their own Xen messages.



Contest Winners Announced in "Extend Firefox 3" Competition

One of the keys to the success of Firefox, the popular open-source browser produced by the Mozilla Foundation, is its extensibility. Earlier this summer, the Mozilla Foundation sponsored a contest, dubbed Extend Firefox 3, that offered prizes to the best add-ons that developers would submit. Last week, contest judges announced the winners.

I read with interest this item from ZDNet on Intel getting open source mojo through its hookup with SpikeSource. If you're unfamiliar with SpikeSource, see our story here.ﾠ SpikeSource has a unique business model that straddles open source and closed source, and is headed up by one of the darlings of the dot-com boom: Kim Polese. SpikeSource is partially funded by Intel Capital, and it powers Intel's Certified Solutions Program which tests and certifies ISV (independent software vendor) applications against security, interoperability and performance metrics. SpikeSource's Solutions Factory platform is used for such tests. Why is this hookup between SpikeSource and Intel good news for open source?
