CodeWeavers to Offer CrossOver For Free On Tuesday

You might recall that several weeks ago Jeremy White, president and CEO of CodeWeavers, promised to had out free licenses for the popular commercial version of Wine if at least one of a handful of (seemingly) unlikely economic goalsCodeWeavers were met before President George. W. Bush left the White House.

Surprisingly, one of those goals has been met. Gas prices have dropped below $2.79 a gallon in the Twin Cities and that means free software for everyone tomorrow at CodeWeavers.

Finding Pages Fast with Firefox 3

The Firefox 3 'awesome bar' generally does a good job of finding the web page you want when you start typing into it, writes Mike Gunderloy on WebWorkerDaily. He notes that it can be dramatically improved on, though. In his post 3 Ways to Find Pages Fast with Firefox 3 he covers Inquisitor, CyberSearch, and Ubiquity--Firefox extensions that can seriously enhance your ability to search. Check out the details.

Could a Linux Gaming Console Ever Work?

A few days ago, Kristin covered Envizions Computer Entertainment's announcement that it will deliver its EVO Linux-based gaming console on November 18th. She predicted that the announcment would probably stoke the long-standing fire surrounding whether Linux can ever be a viable gaming platform, and indeed it did. Many readers responded saying that there is no future for a Linux gaming console. The model that Nintendo followed with the Wii, though, may argue otherwise.

Last week, I had the pleasure of getting some unique insight into the Ubuntu 8.10 release ( Intrepid Ibex ) from Canonical's marketing manager, Gerry Carr. The finalized server and desktop editions of the 8.10 release will be available for download October 30th, and host a variety of new tools and features.

PwnPlayer Gives iPhone Music More Freedom

PwnPlayer Image

There were a few reasons I bypassed iPods when I was in the market for an MP3 player a while back. One of those reasons hasn't changed -- I've never been a fan of iTunes. I wasn't impressed with its performance, generally.

Since I primarily use Linux, the lack of a Linux iTunes client was a problem. Previously, iTunes was almost required for access to the new hotness. The new devices, though not tied to any one format, don't play as nicely with Linux as earlier models.

PwnPlayer is an application (currently in beta) for the iPhone and iPod Touch. One feature of interest is file system playback, allowing easy access to the device's music files on Linux.

Security Flaw Discovered in Google's G1 Mobile Phone

Reports are emerging of a serious security flaw with the Android software that powers T-Mobile's newly-launched G1 smartphone. Charles Miller, the researcher who discovered it, says he notified Google of the flaw this week but decided to also go public with the information to protect users from becoming exploited by people with nefarious intent.

Dimdim/Zimbra Connection Shows Promise

Dimdim is an outstanding open source online conferencing application that we've written about before. It has a number of great features not found in other free online meeting applications, including the ability to record meetings so that the recordings can be shared with others. Earlier this week, Satish Dharmaraj, the co-founder and CEO of Yahoo's open source division Zimbra personally invested in Dimdim, and joined its advisory board.

Drag and DropZones: A Time-Saving Firefox Extension

Webware has an interesting post with a video up about a very useful Firefox extension called Drag and DropZones. It lets you perform quick, gesture-based searches across a huge array of search engines, and execute commands you would normally use your keyboard for with quick gestures. I've been trying it out, and it looks like a definite time-saver. Here's a screenshot-based tour of how this extensionᅠ works.

Free Software for All Schools in Russia

We've written before about how open source initiatives in schools could make it possible to do things like put a Linux notebook (or netbook) in the hands of every kid. England has made headlines for pushing many open source initiatives recently, but the big news this week is that Russia has mandated that all Russian schools must use free software. Are socialist leanings at work here, does this make sense, and will it work?
